Rock salt on bike path

Why is rock salt being spread on the bike path.  It is not a street.  There is no drainage and the practice will eventually kill the vegetation.

Did you ever think they were worried about people slipping and falling ???

You should be worried about people and their safety first! They should be putting ice melt where ever the public travels by foot, even along the Mystic River!

Just shut down the bike path for the Winter and put up a pass at your own risk sign. No need to spend money and time and something used by such a small percentage of people in Somerville.

AHM do you live in Somerville?? lots of people STILL use the bike patch even in winter
AHM February 17, 2014 at 07:23 PM
Yes, for about 70 years. Percentage wise the bike path probably only gets uses by about 1% of the population. We had no problem living without it. If we can save some money by closing it for the Winter that would be great. If not let the people who wants this take care of it and not waste so much city dollars which could be put to good use instead of frivolous things. The money would be better used for the problem of increased homelessness in Somerville than for a bike path.

Even though it is commonly called the "bike path", it has far more pedestrians than bikes (especially during the winter).

A bike path, walking path, exercise path, walk to T path. AHM easy for you to say to just shut it down. Guess you must drive or just sit at home. Forget about the people who do like to or need to walk without having to deal with cars and noisy busy city streets, even in the winter. May be a waste of money for you, not for me.

It is easy to say shut it down but the reality is we are borrowing money we don't have to do these things. And I go out of my way to walk so as not to use my vehicle any more than possible. Never mind I have 2 racing bikes which I refuse to use on the streets of Somerville due to safety reasons. So I am not just sitting here saying shut it down. I have great concerns for the next generations who will inherit all this debt from us spending what we don't have.

Better to use the $$ to salt and make the path safe than to have people falling and injuring themselves exposing the city to lawsuits which would cost far more $$ than the salt does... and I'm also sure they have funds allocated for this in the budget to begin with so they are not "borrowing" money we don't have ....
