Mount Auburn Hospital Presents the "Final and Most Fabulous Evening with Your Favorite Authors" to Benefit the Hoffman Breast Center

Mount Auburn Hospital presents the Final and Most Fabulous Evening with Your Favorite Authors featuring renowned author Alice Hoffman to benefit the hospital’s Hoffman Breast Center on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. Now in its final year, the event will feature readings and anecdotes from popular best-selling authors Jodi Picoult, Gregory Maguire, Ann Hood, Ann Leary, Elinor Lipman, and Lee Woodruff. Joyce Kulhawik will serve as the evening’s emcee and Alice Hoffman, whose family the center is named in honor of, will speak about the impact of breast cancer on her life.

Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman has been called “America’s literary heir to the Brothers Grimm” and her luminous and remarkable “fables of the everyday” have enchanted readers since the publication of her first novel, Property Of, in 1977. Her recent novel, Dovekeepers, spent weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and was named one of the top books of 2011 by countless news and literary publications.  She has written 27 books including Practical Magic and Aquamarine, both of which were made into major motion pictures, as well as, Oprah Book Club selection Here on Earth.  Alice’s work has been published in more than twenty translations and more than one hundred foreign editions. Most recently, Practical Magic was chosen by Entertainment Weekly as one of the 100 New Classic books of the last 25 years and Alice was the recipient of the New England Book Award for Fiction writing.

Her book, Survival Lessons, will be released this October and will detail the challenges and triumphs of facing death and living life as a cancer survivor. Her next novel, The Museum of Extraordinary Things will be released in February of 2014.

Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult is one of the top selling novelists in the world with multiple #1 best-sellers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and South Africa, including her most recent release, The Storyteller. She has written 21 notable works including Nineteen Minutes, House Rules, Change of Heart, Second Glance, The Tenth Circle, and My Sister’s Keeper, which was made into a 2009 movie by New Line Cinema. Additionally, four of her novels were made into Lifetime Original Movies and Jodi is also the recipient of the New England Book Award for Fiction writing.

Gregory Maguire

Gregory Maguire is the author of a number of adult and children’s novels, and several short stories, picture books, essays, and reviews. His book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which was turned into the beloved Tony award-winning Broadway Musical, Wicked: The Musical, which recently celebrates its 5th anniversary. His adult novels include four volumes of The Wicked Years, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror Mirror, and The Next Queen of Heaven, all of which have been national bestsellers.

Ann Hood

Ann Hood is the bestselling author of over a dozen novels and short stories. Her most recent novels include The Obituary Writer, The Knitting Circle, The Red Thread, An Ornithologists Guide to Life, and the memoir, Comfort: a Journey through Grief, which was named one of the top ten nonfiction books of the year by Entertainment Weekly, and was a New York Times Editor's Choice. She is also the recipient of the Paul Bowles Prize for Short Fiction, two Pushcart Prizes, and a Best American Spiritual Writing Award. She current teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing program at The New School in New York City.

Elinor Lipman

Elinor Lipman is the acclaimed author of hundreds of magazine and newspaper stories and 13 books of fiction and nonfiction, including The Inn at Lake Devine, Isabel's Bed,  The Family Man, Tweet Land of Liberty: Irreverent Rhymes from the Political Circus, and most recently The View From Penthouse B and I Can't Complain: (All Too) Personal Essays.  She was the 2011-12 Elizabeth Drew professor of creative writing at Smith College and is secretary of PEN-America.  Her novel, Then She Found Me, was adapted into a 2007 feature film.

Lee Woodruff

Lee  Woodruff is the co-author of the bestselling book, In an Instant, with her husband, Bob Woodruff, as well as Perfectly Imperfect: A Life in Progress and Those We Love Most , both of which she authored herself. She was formerly the lifestyle and family contributor on ABC’s Good Morning America and now serves as a contributing reporter on CBS This Morning. Lee has also written dozens of articles that have appeared in Redbook, Parade, Real Simple, Ladies Home Journal, and more.

Ann Leary

Ann Leary is the author of 3 novels, which include New York Times bestseller, The Good House, as well as An Innocent, A Broad and Outtakes From a Marriage.  She also co-hosts a National Public Radio show, Hash Hags, blogs regularly, and is currently working on her 4th novel. Ann is married to actor-comedian, Denis Leary.

The American Repertory Theater is located at 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA. The event will take place on October 7th at 6:00 pm. There will be a pre-reception with appetizers and drinks, and at the end of the evenings the authors will be available to meet and sign books.
