Obituary: Thomas Steel Sr., Bronze Star Recipient

Steel died Thursday, Feb. 13.

Thomas Steel Sr., of Somerville, died Thursday, Feb. 13, in Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge. Raised in Medford, he was the son of the late John and Helen (McCormack) Steel. Thomas proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Sarsfield), and devoted father of Thomas Steel Jr. and his wife Linda of Marshfield, Maureen Monagle and her husband James of Somerville, Kevin Steel and his wife Joie of Plymouth, Patricia Palmieri and her husband John of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Karen Lilley and her husband David of Belmont and William Steel and his wife Ilana of Newton. Thomas was the loving grandfather of 14 and loving great grandfather of 19. He is also survived by his sister Janet Jackson of San Jose, Calif., and many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Catherine Of Genoa Church, 179 Summer St., Somerville, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Memorial contributions in Thomas's name may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
