Obituary: Atty. Charles Whitney Vining

Vining practiced law in Somerville for 45 years.

Atty. Charles Whitney Vining, 77, of Medford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 22, in the Sawtelle Hospice House, Reading.

Born in Carney Hospital in Boston in 1936. Loved baseball and basketball. Sold newspapers and shined shoes as a kid in Magoun Square, Somerville. He was known as Whitney by his childhood friends.

In 1957, he met Annette (Thibeault) at a church dance. Annette drove him to and from Suffolk Law School. They married in 1962 and moved to Medford where they were blessed with wonderful lifelong neighbors and friends.

In 1972, they bought a house in Falmouth Heights, spending summers on the beach, celebrating the annual 4th of July Parade, playing baseball games and enjoying boat rides. Charles practiced law in Somerville, with Annette as his secretary, for 45 years. He retired in 2005.

An avid fisherman and Red Sox fanatic, Charles enjoyed fishing for many years with his brothers, sons and grandchildren, and celebrating the Red Sox World Series Championships. He enjoyed life to the fullest.

Beloved husband of Annette (Thibeault) Vining. Devoted father of Stephen Vining and his wife Linda of Woburn, Sheila Wizst and her husband Brian of Haverhill, John Vining and his wife Joanne of Woburn, Janice Lucas of Reading, Michael Vining and his wife Phaedra of Woburn, Kenneth Vining and his wife Elizabeth of Medford. Loving grandfather of Stephen Vining Jr., Allison Wizst, Jessica and Daniel Vining, Mark, Rachel and Richard Lucas, Aidan and Quinlan Vining, Rhodey Vining. Cherished son of the late Jean (Musgrave) and George C. Vining. Loving Brother of Carlton Vining and his wife JoAnn. Brother-in-law of Jane Read and her husband Fred.

Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Saturday March 29, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High St., Medford, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 p.m. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Charles’ name to the Sawtelle Hospice House, 320 Haverhill St., Reading, MA 01867.
