Janet Minchello, Former Dame School Crossing Guard, Dies at 77

Minchello died Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Janet A. Minchello, 77, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014.

She was born in Somerville on May 12, 1936 to her parents, James and Eleanor (LaMoth) Coughlin. Janet was raised and educated in Somerville. She is a graduate of Somerville High School, Class of 1955. She has been a resident of Medford for over 50 years.

Janet was well known as a crossing guard near the former Dame School on George Street in Medford. She was an avid ballroom dancer and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Minchello; by her children: Edward Minchello Jr. and his wife Maria of Medford, Janet Minchello of Orange Park, Fla., Michael Minchello and his wife Susan of Medford, Elizabeth Galvin and her husband David of Medford and Richard Minchello and his wife Gail of Abington; by her grandchildren: Michael, Danielle, Matthew, Kerri, Chris, Courtney, DJ, Brittney, Michelle, Lindsey and Ricky; by her great grandchildren: Logan, Tyler, Christian and Joshua; and by her sister, Kay Byers of Tewksbury. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Janet was predeceased by her brothers, Sonny and Jack Coughlin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden, on Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian burial celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden, at 9 a.m. Services will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to VNA of Middlesex-East, 607 North Ave., Suite 17, Wakefield, MA 01880.
