The Challenge to Find Homes for Animals

It's been a slow summer for adoptions at The Animal Rescue League of Boston, and hundreds of animals are looking for someone to take them home.

On Tuesday, eight Patch editors from Somerville, Boston and Brookline volunteered at The Animal Rescue League of Boston in the South End.

Somerville Patch readers may recognize The Animal Rescue League for its regular "Pet of the Week" post.

The Animal Rescue League is challenging itself to arrange adoptions for more animals this summer than it did last summer—a challenge to save 1,200 animals in 12 weeks.

Unfortunately, it's been a slow summer for adoptions.

We Patch editors saw firsthand how many kittens, puppies and other animals are desperate to find permanent homes. One 4-month-old dog, Bingley, from Louisiana, was saved moments before being euthanized, but he can't stay in a crate at The Animal Rescue League forever. The same is true of the numerous kittens and cats who are just waiting, usually alone in a crate, for someone to take them home.

On Tuesday, Becca Manning, editor of Charlestown Patch, obliged one lucky little kitten by adopting her.

But there are hundreds of animals that still need to be adopted.

On Tuesday, we Patch editors spent time with the cats, letting them out of their crates for some welcome play-time with humans. We also took three dogs on a walk through the South End and Back Bay with some flyers and posters to promote The Animal Rescue League's efforts to find homes for animals.
