Sextet in the City

On Sunday, November 24 at 6 pm, Wind Quintet Vento Chiaro collaborates with pianist Judith
Lynn Stillman
, Artist-In-Residence at Rhode Island College,
in a program that includes two of our favorite works for winds and piano:
Poulenc’s Sextet and Beethoven’s Quintet, Op. 16.

The Beethoven Quintet, Op. 16, has been described as having
symphonic aspirations-- and, indeed, with the power and vigor of the winds, the full-scale textures come to life!  There
are piano concerto-like moments, where we can imagine Beethoven exploiting his
own virtuosic pianism, yet it's always brilliantly interwoven with vibrant
conversational elements, in a compelling dialogue with the winds.

The Poulenc Sextet is a favorite chamber music adventures, as Poulenc is a master of juxtaposing parody and poignancy, and his Sextet is replete with romping, weeping, satirical wit, gushing sentimentality, a sense of Parisian music hall, and a full spectrum of colors and harmonic creativity. Referred to as "part monk, part rascal," he epitomizes paradox.  It is a joy to navigate Poulenc's wild journey!
