Muslim Journeys Talk: Prince Among Slaves
Join us July 17 at 7 pm when Boston University historian Linda Heywood discusses the book Prince Among Slaves, the true story of Abdul-Rahman, a Muslim prince kidnapped and sold into slavery in antebellum Mississippi.
A chance encounter with a physician who had known Abdul-Rahman's father
in Africa led to a national campaign for Abdul-Rahman's emancipation. After being freed Abdul became a celebrity speaker on the abolitionist circuit. His literacy in Arabic and his royal origins challenged contemporary stereotypes about Africans.
Linda Heywood is Professor of African-American Studies and History at Boston University. She is theco-author of Central Africans, Atlantic Creoles and the Foundation of America. She served as a consultant for the Smithsonian Institution exhibit African Voices and the PBS series African American Lives.
This program is made possible by a Muslim Journeys grant awarded to the Library by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. We are grateful for their generosity!
