Volunteer Training: Supporting Literacy

How do we acquire literacy?  What does balanced literacy look like in a Somerville classroom?  How can I support reading compehension?  How do I know whether a student is progressing?  How can I help a child become an avid reader?

Somerville Public Schools welcomes new and returning volunteers to a free volunteer training to explore ways we can support student achievement in language arts.

There’s an exciting initiative happening in Somerville Public Schools and it’s name is X-Block.  This is time set aside for Grades 1-8 for independent and group work to ensure that students are engaged in high level and purposeful intervention and/or enrichment activities.

Volunteers are currently needed to support reading activities and 1:1 literacy tutoring during X-Block.  If you have one hour a week, consider spending it with a Somerville Public School student.
