Former Winter Hill Gang boss arraigned
Howard "Howie" Winter was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court Tuesday on charges of extortion. He is accused of trying to shake down two businessmen for tens of thousands of dollars. The judge in the case impounded the prosecution's statment of facts and allegations, at least temporarily, after lawyers for Winter and his codefendant argued it was one-sided.

Tree lighting
Somerville lit its annual Christmas tree on Thursday. It also lit (sort of; there was a glitch) a Hanukkah menorah.
