Valentine's Day

Tuesday is Saint Valentine's Day, when you only get cards from your fifth-grade classmates because your teacher said, "If you're going to hand out cards, you have to hand them out to every student in the class," but your teacher can't control the palpable sense that your classmates are indifferent to you, as evidenced by your collection of 19 generic cards, none of them with a message written inside.

Consider this a way to make Valentine's Day eat your dust. Edgar Allan Poe will come back to life (in the form of literary historian Rob Velella, who will portray the writer) to read works that walk the thin line between love and death. The reading takes place Friday at 7 p.m. at the .

Introduce your child, ages 4 to 9, to hockey. The kids will take their first steps on ice, and they may even play a little. This free event is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Satuday at the .
