Water Main Work May Discolor Water In Parts of Somerville Between Inman, Union, Porter Squares

The following is from the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority:

MWRA work may cause discolored water in Somerville

 On Monday, January 28th ,the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority will be isolating a water main that serves Somerville in support of MASS DOT’s Larz Anderson Bridge rehabilitation project in Cambridge.

The water main isolation will not cause any pressure problems in Somerville, but may cause discolored water for up to 3 days in the areas around Webster Avenue,  from the Cambridge line north to Somerville Avenue, and west to the intersection of Somerville Avenue and Beacon Street.

The bridge work is expected to take about 2 weeks. Once completed, the water main will be reactivated, which may also cause discolored water in this area.  A similar notice will be posted at that time.

If discolored water does occur, it will result from a small amount of iron in the pipes. While it is safe for drinking, cooking and other uses, please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used. Residents should check water clarity before washing any white or lighter colored laundry during this period of work.
