Volunteers Wanted for Somerville 'De-Paving Parties' in June

Help Somerville residents rip up the concrete jungle on their property.

As you all know, Somerville is the most dense city in New England, and much of it is a concrete jungle. A number of home owners in the city want to rip up the pavement on their property and replace it with grass and gardens.

Somerville Climate Action helps people do that with de-paving parties. Volunteers come with pickaxes, sledgehammers, wheelbarrows, food and some good tunes, and they cut up the pavement and cart it away.

There are two de-paving parties scheduled for June:

  • Saturday, June 2: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Gail Strickler's house, 50 Francesca Ave. (near Davis Square)
  • Saturday, June 16: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at John Ringeling's house, 15 Vinal Ave. (across from the )
