Sandy Batters Somerville, Things to Know on Tuesday

Hurricane Sandy brought powerful tropical-storm conditions to Somerville Monday. It uprooted trees, knocked down limbs and utility lines, caused flooding and led to power outages in the city Monday afternoon and into the night. There were reports of residents being evacuated due to potential dangers from gas leaks and live wires.

Somerville firefighters and police officers spent most of Monday responding to hazardous situations throughout the city, and as of Monday night they were still at it.

Somerville was still expecting rain and strong winds Tuesday, though the worst of the storm was supposed to be over late Monday night and early Tuesday.

School cancelled Tuesday
Somerville Public Schools are cancelled Tuesday, according to the school district's website.

Power outages
As of 9:30 p.m. Monday, 970 Somerville NSTAR customers were without electrical service, according to the utility company's power outage map.

Trash pickup on normal Tuesday schedule
The city was planning normal trash pickup Tuesday, but it asked people to put out their trash Tuesday morning as opposed to Monday night.

Parking
Parking enforcement at meters and in municipal lots was expected to resume at 10 a.m. Tuesday
