Did you know that a summer cookout can actually be hazardous for your dog?

That's right, unless the proper precautions are taken the fun of a cookout can quickly be derailed by a very unhappy or sickly pup. In order to keep your canine safe and tail-wagging while still enjoying a summer BBQ you need only to follow a few simple steps:

·        Make sure that your dog is wearing ID tags and that the perimeter of your yard is secure in case the loud noises or volume of people causes them to want to bolt.

·        If your dog is simply too overwhelmed by the cookout it is best to put them away inside in order to not stress them out.

·        Keep all potentially harmful cookout supplies up and away from your dog's reach such as lighter fuid, charcoal, citronella, alcohol etc. Even unlit matches, which contain phosphorus, can be toxic if ingested!

·        If you do need to use bugspray or sunscreen on your pup make sure that it is one that is approved for use on pets-otherwise it can do more harm than good if licked off!

·        If your dog is curious consider keeping them tied up somewhere so that they don't burn themselves on hot grills or get to plates of BBQ!

·        If guests want to play with your dog encourage them to do so away from any grilling flames, and have them oversee their children to make sure they aren't playing with your pup too roughly.

·        Make it very clear to guests that feeding your dog scraps of people food is not allowed and can even be harmful. Perhaps supply a bag of approved treats that your guests can feed to your dog instead.

Practicing this pet safety will ensure that all of your family remains safe and have only fond memories of summer and barbecuing!
