'World of Beer' Chain Eyes Davis Square Location

The national chain of bars wants to open in the long-vacant Social Security building in Davis Square.

World of Beer, a national chain of craft-beer bars, wants to come to Davis Square, according to the food blog Boston Eater, which picked up the story from Davis Square LiveJournal.

According to the LiveJournal post, which relays an email from Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz, World of Beer wants to open in the long-vacant Social Security building at 240 Elm St.

In her email, as posted on LiveJournal, Gewirtz wrote she's had two meetings with representatives from World of Beer, and she said, "I am VERY concerned about this as a possible use since I don't want to see a drinking hole in Davis that allows you to bring in your own food and barely serves any food of their own. They have told me I have the wrong idea and it will be craft brews geared towards an 'upscale' crowd. I am highly skeptical."

She then wrote that World of Beer has proposed partnering with a restaurant in the space.

In regard to adding another "watering hole" to Davis Square, one commenter on Davis Square LiveJournal wrote, "I get [Gewirtz's] concern about vomiting college students but come on, the cat's so far out of that bag he's found a new apartment on Craigslist."

As of the middle of March, there were 39 World of Beer locations across the country, according to the company's website, and it had immediate plans to open nine more locations soon—Davis Square was not among them.

The company's website says the bars are "about being surrounded by good people who enjoy awesome beer, great music, and sports. When you walk into World of Beer, we want you to feel like you’re hosting a party in your own living room."

There's a community meeting about the proposal scheduled for April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the site—240 Elm St.—according to the LiveJournal post.
