Somerville Whole Foods Opens in Inman Square

Formerly a Johnnie's Foodmaster, Whole Foods, at 45 Beacon St., opened in Inman Square Wednesday morning.

A bread-breaking ceremony Wednesday morning—as opposed to a ribbon-cutting ceremony—made it official: The new Whole Foods on Beacon Street, near Inman Square, is open.

The new market opened at the former site of a Johnnie's Foodmaster, a supermarket chain that announced it was closing in October, 2012. It's the 27th Whole Foods in Massachusetts.

Johnnie's Foodmaster closed two stores in Somerville. The other one, in West Somerville, became a Stop & Shop.

After Wednesday's bread-breaking, people poured into the store to do some shopping.

Whole Foods planned to donate five percent of the day's sales to five local non-profits: Second Chances, Groundwork Somerville, The Family Center, Community Cooks and Food for Free.

Whole Foods, at 45 Beacon St., is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
