New York Man Wins LEGOLAND Competition

A 26-year-old will leave his job in the New York state Senate to build LEGOs professionally in Somerville.

Ian Coffey, a 26-year-old from Albany, N.Y., will be coming to Somerville this spring as the new "master builder" at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston.

More:

Coffey won LEGOLAND Discovery Center's Brick Factor competition, held on Jan. 25 and 26 at the Boston Public Library's Copley Square branch. He competed against more than 60 contestants from around the country for the chance to land the LEGO dream job, according to Boston Business Journal.

According to BostInno, Coffey previously worked as a desk clerk for the New York state Senate—before winning the competition—and has loved building LEGOs his whole life.

Boston Magazine said Coffey's interaction with children during the weekend-long competition played a role in his winning. The master builder at LEGOLAND Discovery Center will lead workshops and visit schools as a regular part of his job.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center opens in Somerville's Assembly Row in May.
