Made in Somerville: Signs Found Around Boston and Beyond

SRP Signs, on Pearl Street, makes signs and fixtures for businesses like Legal Seafood.

You've likely seen the company's handiwork around Boston, especially if you occasionally eat at a restaurant.

Somerville's SRP Signs has created signs for most of the Boston's Legal Seafood restaurants. It's done work for J.P. Licks, Harpoon Brewery and Harvard Medical School, to name just a few of the company's clients. Here in Somerville, the new Burger Dive restaurant in Assembly Square is adorned by SRP's sign and awning, and the company is poised to create signs for other restaurants coming to the new Assembly Row development.

The company got started in 1985 when its owner, Stuart Pitchel, 52, was a 25-year-old cab driver who had attended school for fine arts. "I made signs during the day," he said, and, "my first big job was lettering all the taxi cabs."

"I eventually got a shop, an employee, and it grew from there," he said.

Pitchel ran his shop in Watertown and Waltham, renting space, before buying a workshop space in Somerville in 2007.

Currently, the company's seven employees make signs out of its 17,000 square-foot shop on Pearl Street, near Somerville High School.

Here are some photos of SRP Signs' work and shop.

Great to see the success of Stuart and SRP Signs! I was in school with Stuart long ago while he completed his degree in Art. He's a gifted artist with a great big generous heart. Congratulations Stuart!
