Everett Voters Approve Casino at Somerville's Doorstep

The proposed casino would be built less than 1,000 feet, across the river, from Somerville's Assembly Square.

Voters in Everett Saturday overwhelmingly approved a proposal by casino mogul Steve Wynn to build a casino on the Mystic River, just across the river from Somerville and near the new Assembly Row development.

Nearly 87 percent of Everett voters approved the proposal for a $1.2 billion casino in a referendum vote held Saturday, according to BostonHerald.com.

Everett's city clerk told the Herald turnout was relatively high for the referendum.

According to WBUR, Wynn plans to build a casino along the Mystic river at the former site of a Monsanto Chemical Co. plant—next to the Target, Costco and Home Depot, for anyone who shops there.

The site is less than 1,000 feet across the river from Somerville, and would be close to the new Assembly Row development and spruced up riverside parkland in Somerville's Assembly Square. You can see a map of the proposed site at WBUR.org.

Everett's approval of the casino means the proposal can now go before the state gambling commission where it will compete against two other casino proposals—one at Suffolk Downs in East Boston and Revere, the other, proposed by Foxwoods, in Milford—for a lone license to operate in the Greater Boston region, according to the Boston Globe.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has spoken against the casino plan at Somerville's border.
