Construction Firm Hired for Green Line Extension

White Skanska Kiewit will help design and construct upcoming phases of the Green Line Extension project.

White Skanska Kiewit has been selected as the construction manager-general contractor for the Green Line Extension, according to an announcement from the Green Line Extension team.

The announcement says White Skanska Kiewit is a join venture among J.F.White Contracting Co., Skanska USA Civil Northeast, Inc. and Kiewit Infrastructure Co., and that the firm was awarded on July 19 a contract to conduct pre-construction services for the rail project.

Phase 1 of the Green Line Extension, which consists of repairing two bridges and knocking down a building in Cambridge, is already under way.

White Skanska Kiewit, as construction manager-general contractor, will help design and construct upcoming phases of the project:

Phase 2/2A will extend the Green Line to Union Square and Washington Street in Somerville, and is supposed to be complete by 2017.

Phase 3 consists of building a new maintenance facility, and Phase 4 consists of extending the Green Line to College Avenue in Medford, which is expected to be complete by 2019 or 2020.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the MBTA are applying for federal New Starts money to pay for roughly half of the $1.3 billion project.
