CHART: Where Does Somerville Go for Coffee?

We compare Somerville to other communities in the area, focusing on Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks. Of course, Somerville is also filled with beloved local coffee shops, too.

Greater Boston is a coffee-mad area, with chain and local coffee shops seemingly on every corner.

There are tons of great locally owned choices in each city and town listed below, and in Somerville those places are some of the most popular.

That said, for the purpose of this chart Patch looked at the big corporate heavyweights in the area: Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks.

It’s not surprising Dunkin' Donuts controls more locations in the 18 communities surveyed, but did you know they outpace Starbucks by an almost 3:1 ratio?

There are 115 Dunks in the surveyed region, compared to 43 Starbucks. Taken together, that’s 158 chain locations in 18 communities. Add in the eight Honey Dews and six Paneras and you’ve got 172 corporate-controlled coffee dispensers, about 10 per community in our survey. That’s a lot of purveyors for the world’s favorite stimulant.

In Somerville, there are 16 Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks, most of them Dunkins. Only Cambridge boasts more.

Here’s the breakdown of Starbucks and Dunkin' Donut locations in the area. And check out Somerville Patch's directory if you’d prefer to find a locally owned caffeine dealer. Here are some:

And of you prefer tea:

You can probably name two of the Starbucks in Somerville if you think about it. There's the one in Davis Square. There's another one outside Porter Square near the . Where's the third?

You forgot the Cafe at the Armory!

Also, speaking of 'corporate' coffee places, how about Au Bon Pain? Davis Square, Harvard Square, Putnam Square, Central Square, Kendall Square, South Station, and lots of other places around town.

Kelsey Roth gets the extra credit! Well done. I had to look it up. We did forget the Armory. Another great place. I'm sure there are other places we forgot. I believe Au Bon Pain started in Boston ...

Yep, Au Bon Pain started at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in the late 1970s. They came to Harvard Square in the early 80s, then Davis Square in the later 80s. For a short period of time, the same company owned both Au Bon Pain and Panera.
