This Weekend in Somerville: Jazz, Harvest, Oktober and Scary Film Fests

Plus, an artists market and a book sale.

Joe's Jazz Fest
This week-long jazz festival kicks off Saturday with a free outdoor concert at Powderhouse Park. Then, there will be live performances at venues throughout Somerville until Nov. 3. Saturday's concert is from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Harvest Fest
Somerville Local First's annual Harvest Fest features tastings of beer, wine, and food. There will also be art and music. This year there's also a costume contest. Harvest Fest is Saturday, and there are two tasting sessions. Session one is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and session two is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. It's at The Center for Arts at the Armory.

Monster Mashed-Up and Oktoberfest
Somerville Avenue will host Monster Mashed-Up and Oktoberfest on Sunday. It will feature chainswaw artists carving huge pumpkins, live music, ghost tours, a costume parade for kids, a rock-climbing wall and some good pub and restaurant hopping (for those of age). It starts at 12 p.m. and takes place along all of Somerville Avenue from Union Square to Beacon Street.

Shudder Fest at Somerville Theatre
Watch a special selection of horror films and shorts at Somerville Theatre. There are screenings on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. both nights.

Friends of the Public Library book sale
The fall book sale supports cultural and educational programs at the library, such as children's programs and museum passes. The book sale is Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Somerville Library Central Branch. This year there's a good collection of history, biography, literature and fiction, along with DVDs, CDs and more. Check here for times.

SLAM Halloween Artist Market
Shop for Halloween-themed crafts, jewelry, photography, textiles, painting and wearable art. It's Saturday starting at 12 p.m. at The Burren. There will also be live bluegrass music and a $5 lunch special.
