This Weekend in Somerville: Art in Action, Mini-Maker Faire, Oktoberfest

The Somerville Homeless Coalition 5K, a sci-fi and fantasy film festival, and a Make-A-Wish performance are among the other things happening in Somerville this weekend.

Art in Action
On this walk you'll explore public art in Somerville, and you'll have the chance to decorate a switchbox, thus creating another piece of public art in the city. The walk will help launch the Somerville Art Council's new online interactive map of art in the city. The Art in Action walk kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Foss Park.

Somerville Homeless Coalition 5K
The 18th annual Somerville Homeless Coalition 5K race takes place Saturday at 9 a.m. It's sponsored by a ton of local businesses, it includes brunch, and proceeds benefit the Somerville Homeless Coalition. You can register here.

Somerville Mini-Maker Faire
Produced by Artisan's Asylum, this faire will feature robots, contraptions, art, crafts, 3D printers and other exhibits that celebrate DIY culture in Somerville. It's Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Union Square.

Oktoberfest Weekend in Somerville
Celebrate Oktoberfest in Davis Square on Sunday and in Magoun Square on Saturday and Sunday. Both celebrations will be from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Make-A-Wish Performance
When Hanna Brait, now 13, was 7 years old when she was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma. At the time, she took a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World, which renewed her sense of hope. She decided to help other kids who were diagnosed with serious illnesses, and on Sunday she'll be performing with the String Theory Quartet as part of a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It's at 2 p.m. at Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, 155 Powderhouse Blvd., and you can get tickets here.

Interrupting Racism: An Interactive Workshop

Organized by the Rainbow Lifelong Learning Institute, this workshop will give practical, "hands on" tools to "interrupt racism as it happens." It's at 12 p.m. Saturday at the Visiting Nurses Association.

Etheria Science Fiction and Fantasy Film Festival
See work by emerging femaile science fiction and fantasy filmmakers. It's Saturday at 4 p.m. at Somerville Theatre.

For Better or Worse: 19th Century Tales Along the Middlesex and Washington, D.C. Canals
Learn about the burning of the Ursuline Convent in 1834, which happened in Somerville. Also, hear about the miraculous cure of a Washington, D.C., widow in 1824, which caused a movement and backlash. It's Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Somerville Museum, One Westwood Rd.

"Crossing Musical Borders Part 1: French Canadian Fiddle and Turkish/Balkan Music
A top fiddling team will perform Scandinavian, Appalachian and Eastern European music. The performance is Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at The Center for Arts at the Armory.
