Kicking it old school, Somerville Community Access Television (SCATV) is offering a summertime Super-8 filmmaking workshop. Get a solid working knowledge of this approachable film medium. Instructor Tara Merenda Nelson is a working artist with an impressive resume of screenings all over the world, including MoMA (NYC), The New York Film Festival, Boston's ICA and the Andy Warhol Museum.

While production at SCATV centers on video, no video camera can truly replicate the unique look of film and this course will cover the basics of working with this special format. Using a Super 8 camera, students will have the opportunity to shoot their own rolls of film and edit their movies using either traditional splicing or digital techniques. They will also cover some direct animation styles, such as hand-painting, tinting, and scratching the film. At the end of the course, a screening of student work will be held in SCATV's studio.

The 4-session workshop is just $100, $60 for members. Classes are Saturdays, July 7 to 28, 2012 starting at noon.

To register call SCATV at (617)628-8826 or stop by the SCATV Studios at 90 Union Square, Somerville.
