El Sistema Brings Orchestral Music Curriculum to Somerville Kids

Third- and fourth-graders at the East Somerville Community School will receive intensive after-school training on string instruments.

This fall, around 40 to 50 third- and fourth-graders at the will receive intensive and daily training on string instruments, according to an announcement from .

It's part of a new after-school program in Somerville called El Sistema Somerville.

The kids will spend every afternoon after school, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., learning to play string instruments in an ensemble setting.

Diane Cline, a professional violinist with a master's degree in music education, will be the program's director, according to the announcement, and the young students will also work with community members and college students, who will serve as music mentors. 

The initiative is based on music education program started in Venezuela that seeks to improve young people's lives through music. It's been featured on 60 Minutes and the TED blog, among other places.
