Bands from Rio, London, New Orleans to Play HONK! in October

The annual HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands is scheduled to take place in Somerville from Oct. 11 to 14.

This year, according to a video on the HONK! Festival's website, bands from Rio de Janeiro, London and New Orleans are expected to be part of the weekend-long festivities.

Among those bands, according to the video, will be the Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club, from New Orleans's 7th Ward, which was as performing on Mother's Day when a gunman opened fire, injuring 19 people.

The Original Big 7 will lead the HONK! parade down Massachusetts Avenue this year, the video says.

Also invited to the festival are Os Siderais, from Rio, and Perhaps Contraption, from London.

The festival, which began in Somerville in 2006, will include favorite activities, such as the Friday night lantern parade and music programs for kids.

It's also launched a Kickstarter campaign to help cover some of the costs of the festival. As in previous years, it's seeking volunteers to help house musicians during the festivities.
