Six Great Sledding Spots in the Somerville Area

With snow on the ground, now is the time to take advantage of these sledding hot spots.

With snow still lingering from Saturday's storm, now's the time to do some sledding.

Several locations in the Somerville area are perfect winter wonderlands. However, you'll need to bring your own sledding equipment to these five popular sledding destinations:

1) Tufts University
Somerville/Medford:The hills at Tufts are prime for sledding.

2) Powder House Park
Somerville. Just make sure you don't fly off the hill into Broadway.

3) Fellsmere Pond
Off Fellsway East, near Medford/Malden line: Accessible on the Fellsway East, this area near Fellsmere Park is an old favorite with people from the area for sledding and snow tubing.

4) Bear Hill Golf Course
2 North St., Stoneham: Bear Hill, which is a nine-hole golf course during the warm weather months, is a great local sledding option during the winter.

5) Mount Hood Golf Course
100 Slayton Road, Melrose: Mount Hood is routinely voted one of the best sledding areas in Massachusetts.

6) Sheepfold Area of Middlesex Fells
Off Route 28 in Stoneham: Sheepfold is best known as a local dog-friendly park but its fields and hills offer some great terrain to sled on.

When my kids were young, we used to go the Robbins Farm Park across the street from the Brackett Elementary School in Arlington Heights. It was safe and had two hills, a short one for beginners and the very young, and a much longer one for the thrill seekers.
