Flag researcher Byron DeLear, who has argued the traditional story of the Grand Union flag, with 13 stripes, is historically accurate, spoke at the ceremony and said, "This is sacred and hallowed ground for our nation."

The original flag raising on Jan. 1, 1776 was "a pivotal event and moment" in the history of America, he said.
