Kids Go Gaga Over New Somerville Park

A new park and playground in East Somerville officially opened Monday night, and early reviews, from screaming kids, seem good.

If you don't like the sound of children laughing and having a good time, stay away from the new Chuckie Harris Park.

The East Somerville park opened for the first time Monday night with scores kids running around, barreling down the slide, splashing around under a huge yellow water tower and using the swings.

The kids, their parents and other residents of East Somerville visited the new park for a ribbon cutting ceremony, but the youngsters seemed a little too distracted by the play features to pay much attention to the speaking program.

The new park, at the corner of Broadway and Cross Street—formerly an empty lot—also features new landscaping and an outdoor cafe seating area. It can be used for outdoor movies, and on Aug. 8 you can watch Free Willy there as part of SomerMovie Fest.

For Lily Wong, 6, and Quinn Wong, 4, the best part of the new park was the swings, followed by the large communal slide—and apparently for Quinn, dancing around like a maniac, if you see the video above.

Will Martin of Somerville-based GroundView, one of the architects of the new park along with Eden Dutcher, said, "We're overwhelmingly excited to see so many families here."

"They seem to like it," he said about all the kids playing.
