Jury Awards $16.7 Million Award in Cancer Lawsuit

The daughter of a woman who died after a radiologist reportedly missed evidence of lung cancer in a chest X-ray has been awarded $16.7 million by a jury.
The award, which was against Dr. Peter Clarke of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is the largest medical malpractice case in Massachusetts this year, reported The Boston Globe.
Jeanne Ellis died at the age of 47 in August 2008. She visited the Brigham and Women’s emergency room in August 2006 complaining of a persistent cough.

A chest X-ray was ordered and Clarke reportedly read the X-ray and didn’t find a problem.
A year later, Ellis returned after her symptoms worsened and doctors found advanced lung cancer that had spread to other parts of her body.

Clarke’s lawyer, Philip E. Murray told The Boston Globe that he plans to ask for a new trial.
