Five Things: 'Phantomaton,' Weeds, Toy Cameras and Math

Some things to know and do in Somerville today.

1) Phantomaton: Opening Reception
This exhibit, which plays with the words "phantom" and "automaton," according to the listing, "explores the world of man and creation through the influences alchemy to biotechnology and whatever lies in between." The show includes work by artists "who have created an alternate world of rabbits and robots and scarcely-there being," it says. The opening reception for the exhibit is tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Nave Gallery Annex in Davis Square (53 Chester St.).

2) An Herbalist's Perspective on Weedy Species
The Somerville Garden Club is sponsoring this talk about "weeds," which can often be used as food or medicine (or for other purposes). Steph Zabel is giving the talk, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland St.

3) Enter the Somerville Toy Camera Festival
The Nave Gallery and the Washington Street Art Center are putting on the Somerville Toy Camera Festival. Toy cameras are basically cheap, low-end cameras, and organizers are calling for entries of artwork created with these cameras. The festival takes place in August and September, and entries are due July 24. Learn more here.

4) Somerville Mathematics Fund Scholarship Winners
The Somerville Mathematics Fund has given $1,000 scholarships to five Somerville students:  Hae-Young C. Joo, Emily Mei, Nickolas Menezes, Rishab Sharma and Djinnie Timoleon. Congratulations.

5) Weather
A chance of showers and thunderstorms, with highs around 85.
