Five Things: A Day for Supporting Education

There are a number of benefits and events for local schools, plus a night of films about cats and dogs.

There are six items on today's list of five things.

1)
When you buy pizza at tonight, you'll benefit the Somerville Family Network. There's also a bake sale and a raffle, with prizes from , , and more. The benefit begins at 5 p.m.

2)
Enjoy a night of experimental films about cats and dogs at . The films begin at 7 p.m. This animal-themed evening is for adults 18 years old and older.

3)
Parents of prospective and current students can attend an open house at the today to visit classrooms and learn about the school's academic and extracurricular programs. The open house is from 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 12:15 p.. to 2 p.m.

Head to tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a trivia competition that benefits . You can bring your own six-person team or form a team on the spot. Proceeds from the competition will go to the school's Junior Journey, a three-week community service and language-learning program in Guatemala. Sign up here.

Volunteers and those interested in volunteering, along with parents and guardians, can learn about efforts to improve early reading skills through classroom volunteering, tutoring, at-home activities and more. Tonight's session is interactive and fun, and it starts at 6 p.m. at the . .

6) Weather and Red Sox
Today will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 40s. In less than two weeks, on Feb. 19, Red Sox catchers and pitchers will report for Spring Training. The team will play it's first Spring Training game March 3 against the Northeastern University Huskies.
