Five Fun Somerville Things Happening this Weekend

Weekend happenings: dogs, accordions, fireworks, cannoli, plants.

Somerville celebrates its dogs Sunday at the 2011 Somerville Dog Festival. Check out demonstrations, where trained dogs exhibit their skills with agility, search and rescue, Frisbee, obedience and even skateboarding. Meet Max, Somerville's only police dog. There will be doggie fashion, a trick contest (the winner gets a night at a Vermont Bed and Breakfast with his or her dog), and a "Canine Good Citizen" clinic, among other things.

Well-mannered dogs with current rabies vaccinations are welcome, and the event is free. However, the Dog Festival does accept donations, and proceeds benefit The Animal Rescue League of Boston.

Does the term "accordion flash mob" get your juices flowing? On Saturday in Union Square, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., tons of musicians will entertain with accordions and concertinas, and the music will reflect a wide array of cultures and musical traditions: klezmer music, the sounds of Cape Verde, Bulgarian folk music, modern American Jazz and more. From 12 p.m to 3 p.m., the public is invited to participate in an accordions-around-Somerville event taking place throughout the city. There will also be a high-wire musical act, crafts tables and food. Check out the event's Facebook page for more information.

On Saturday, starting at 4 p.m., head over to in Assembly Square for RiverFest. There will be family-friendly games and activities, live entertainment, food from and other establishments, and the evening ends with a fireworks display.

World biggest cannoli

Golden Cannoli Shells, a Somerville business, will attempt to make the world's largest cannoli on Saturday at the New England Dessert Showcase. The cannoli masters will endeavor to make a 10-foot mega cannoli. Cannoli samples will be available for $1, and proceeds go to a number of charities partnering with the Dessert Showcase. Somerville Garden Club plant sale

Head to the intersection of College Avenue and Holland Street in Davis Square Saturday to buy all sorts of perennials and house plants. Whether you have sun or shade, a large yard or a small kitchen planter, you'll find the right plant. Proceeds benefit the Somerville Garden Club, a nonprofit that, among other things, maintains public plantings throughout the city.
