Condoization of Somerville Discussed on Local TV Show

Just how many condos does Somerville need? Ward 4 Alderman Tony Lafuente and Somerville artist Tim Devin talk about development and some specific zoning issues near Union Square on SCATV's "Greater Somerville."

On a recent episode of SCATV's "Greater Somerville," Ward 4 Alderman Tony Lafuente and Somerville artist Tim Devin, along with host KyAnn Anderson, discussed the condoization of Somerville (yes, I realize "condoize" isn't a real word, yet).

The conversation centered on a proposal to re-zone part of Somerville Avenue, near Market Basket, that would, Devin argued, encourage tall condo buildings to replace what's there now: commercial space, innovation labs, artist studios and small businesses.

Devin felt that would be a mistake.

Lafuente talked about broader issues of development in the city. The conversation also addressed changes in Union Square, local jobs and business, and what might happen to the Market Basket, a popular supermarket, if that area is re-zoned.
