OBITUARY: Catherine M. (Nigro) Guinee

Catherine M. (Nigro) Guinee, 91, of Acton, formerly of Somerville, died Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Life Care Center of Acton. She was the beloved wife of the late John V. Guinee. They were married in 1948 at St. Benedict Church in Somerville.

Born in East Boston on September 23, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Mazza) Nigro. She attended Somerville public schools, graduated from Somerville High School and in 1942 received a Bachelor in Science degree from Emmanuel College in Boston.

For 30 years, prior to her retirement, Mrs. Guinee taught first grade at the Arthur D. Healey School in Somerville. Later she taught English as a second language. She was a longtime resident of Somerville where she raised her family and was active in church, civic and social activities. During the 1960’s, she served as President of the Peter Claver Guild of Boston College High School and served as President of the Emmanuel College Alumni Association. She was a member of the Somerville Teachers Association and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

Most important to her was her family, her church, her college and her friends and she was always there whenever anyone needed assistance. She was quietly charitable, was a devoted grandmother, an avid knitter, a great cook and enjoyed reading.

Survivors include her son, David V. Guinee and his wife Christine of Acton, her daughter, Paula M. McCusker of Westwood and her late husband Benjamin Nahabedian, her grandchildren, Jeffrey Guinee, Kate McCusker, Douglas McCusker, Alicia Guinee Austin and her husband Randall, her great grandchildren, Ryan Austin and Adeline Austin.

The family of Mrs. Guinee would like to thank the Life Care Center of Acton for their comforting care during a very difficult time.
