Kaplan Addresses the Need for Web Developers with New Course

Technology is an evolving industry. According to code.org, by 2020 there will be 1,000,000 more jobs than computer science students. As a result, companies are constantly looking for new talent to help develop applications, create websites and write code. Although the demand for coders and developers is high, many employers are finding that there is a lack of talent throughout the industry.

To account for this increased demand, Kaplan Test Prep, the global leader in test prep, and thoughtbot, a premier web and mobile design and development firm, have partnered to launch Metis, a software developer bootcamp for individuals interested in becoming professional Ruby on Rails web developers. Unlike other courses, Metis brings together two industry heavyweights to offer a new economy skills training (NEST) program which provides immersive training in skills that are in high demand in today’s job market, preparing participants for hire.

“The current disparity between supply and demand for developer talent in our economy means fluency in coding and software languages is a much-needed capability in today’s job market,” said Bernardo Rodriguez, Chief Digital Officer, Kaplan Test Prep.

Rolling applications are being accepted until January 10 and classes will begin on February 24. Classes will be held at thoughtbot’s headquarter in Downtown Crossing, which speaks to the fact that the Boston-metro area is quickly becoming the next major research hub in the US. Companies like Facebook, Microsoft and Google are already setting up shop in the area as the need for new coders and developers continues to rise. Additionally, this inaugural class will kick start Metis, promoting new training in the software development industry not only in Boston, but nationally as it expands.

This course is perfect for individuals who are looking for a way to advance their career and take it to the next level. The boot camp will be a 12-week intensive training program, using curriculum informed by Kaplan’s proprietary learning science and assessment insights and delivered by thoughtbot experts. Students will be trained in HTML5: Erb, CSS: Sass, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails and Git, and will taught how to independently create Ruby on Rails applications. At the end of the program, graduates will participate in a Hiring Day, which will connect Metis graduates with potential employers.
