Community Corner

Homelessness Forum March 30th

A number of local organizations are planning a free public forum on homelessness in Arlington, Somerville, and Cambridge and other Massachusetts areas.  Entitled Ending Homelessness: What You Can Do, the forum features keynote speaker State Representative Byron Rushing, co-chair of the Commission to End Homelessness and House Majority Whip.

Other speakers who will shed light on solutions to homelessness are: Diane Sullivan, policy director for Homes for Families who was homeless with her family, and Danny LeBlanc, CEO of the Somerville Community Corporation. LeBlanc will discuss the importance of raising the minimum wage. Area Beacon Hill lawmakers will respond to presentations. Homelessness prevention, housing and service organizations will have displays.

Homelessness has reached record levels due to the economic recession, federal budget cuts, low wage jobs and the shortage of affordable rental housing.  Over 2000 families are in shelters and another 2100 families are in motels each night, posing great risk to the health and development of children, and at significant cost to the Commonwealth.
