Empty Bowls Project Sunday benefits On The Rise

It will be a souper Sunday fundraiser Dec. 15 that benefits On The Rise Inc. (right), a Cambridge-based non-profit that offers homeless women a day program, as 1369 Coffee House and Olé restaurant come together to work with other local eateries to fill hand-made pottery bowls with hearty soups for a $30 donation. The event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at Olé, located at 11 Springfield Street in Inman Square.

“The Empty Bowls Project is a wonderful idea that involves local restaurants and artists,” said Martha Sandler, executive director of On The Rise. “For $30, participants can pick a beautiful hand-made bowl, donated by area pottery studios, and fill it with delicious soup. And once the soup is gone, participants get to keep the bowl.”

On The Rise, located in a classic Victorian at 341 Broadway, offers women a sanctuary where they can meet life’s daily necessities, find nutritious meals, seasonal clothing, a safe place to sit, to shower, and even a place to receive mail. They can forge relationships and a sense of community and find the resources they need to move out of homelessness. On The Rise staff act as advocates, helping them access the services they need, like health care, or helping them navigate the court system, or find counseling or rehabilitation and addiction services. The staff supports the women and helps foster change.

Feet of Clay studio in Brookline held a special studio day during which more than 30 artists created bowls, many of them made on a pottery wheel, to donate to the event. Mudflat Studio on Broadway in Somerville also gathered bowls from its artists for the fundraiser.

Restaurants sponsoring the project include the 1369 Coffeehouse, City Girl Cafe, East Coast Grill, Puritan and Co., Sweet Basil Catering, Nashoba Brook Bakery, and Trina’s Starlite Lounge.
