What's your "Why"?

Knowing what your goal is isn't enough - figuring out WHY you want to accomplish your goal will lead to your success.

To ensure our member’s success, we make it a point at Achieve to learn and apply the most up-to-date training and nutrition methods that our industry has to offer. With that being said, we also strive to learn habit-changing techniques in order to help our members adopt lifestyle changes more easily. Recently, we’ve changed our goals sheet during our initial strategy session with our members to have a “why?” component along with our normal “what?” section.

In his book, The Compound Effect, Darren Hardy discusses that just setting a goal and knowing what it is isn’t enough, you need to figure out why it’s important to you. Once you’ve established the why, you have something that’s holding you much more accountable than just your willpower. Hardy asks, “What’s going to stop you from falling back into your mindless bad habits? What’s going to be different this time versus the times you’ve tried and failed before? As soon as you get the slightest bit uncomfortable, you’re going to be tempted to slide back into your old, comfortable routine.” Willpower can only work for so long, and unless you figure out what your “why” is, you’ll end up giving up too easily.

There needs to be some sort of emotional component to the why. If losing 10 pounds is your goal, “to look better” isn’t powerful or motivating enough to be a why. Maybe you’re high school reunion is coming up and you want to look your best in front of your former classmates. Or perhaps you feel like you’ve been letting your health slip over the years and you want to avoid that family history of heart disease. Or maybe you just want to fit back into your favorite pair of jeans that you grew out of a few years ago. As long as your why is strong enough and important enough to you, you’ll have a much easier time pushing through those barriers and mindless bad habits that force you to lose sight of your goals and New Year’s resolutions.
