Somerville Educator Wins Award, Station House Chili Fest

Five things to know and do in Somerville on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

1) Somerville Educator Wins Citizenship in Action Award
Richard Melillo, a 25-year veteran of Somerville High School, received the Citizenship in Action Award from the Middlesex District Attorney's office. The award is given to individuals in Middlesex County who make "local communities safer and healthier by taking positive action to enhance positive school climate, reduce youth risk-taking behavior or support the values of caring, cooperation and civic responsibility." Meillo, since 1985, has worked at Somerville High School to curtail truancy. Among other things he established the Systemic Family Approach to Truancy in Somerville High School and has trained other schools on matters of truancy, an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney's office says. Congratulations.

2) 'Station House Chili Fest'
Tufts University students celebrate Somerville and Medford police officers, firefighters and EMS teams today with the Station House Chili Fest. It's from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carmichael Dining Hall.

3) Halloween on the Tube: Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Watch classic Halloween-themed TV and cartoon episodes while donating to UNICEF. It's at 8 p.m. at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square.

4) 
L.L.Bean Brings a “Wintervention” to Tufts University
In other Tufts news, L.L. Bean's "bootmobile" will be at the university today, and students can win prizes, gear and even a shopping spree. It'll be on campus at around 11 a.m.
