Online Survey Explores Arts Economy in Somerville

Five things to know and do in and around Somerville on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.

1) Take a Survey: Somerville's Creative Economy
The Somerville Arts Council, the city's planning office and the UMass Center for Policy Analysis are trying to assess how artists in Somerville play a role in the local economy, and it's asking creative folks in town to take a short online survey. And you don't have to be a painter, sculptor or oboist to participate: If you work in advertising, marketing, journalism, website building or any other creative field, you can take the survey. Or, as the Somerville Arts Council writes on its website, "[The survey] essentially encompasses those businesses, organizations, and individuals who produce and distribute cultural goods, services, and intellectual property—from art, film, photography, and music to architecture, advertising, and jewelry design." It's a short survey, and you can find it here. It's completely anonymous, but you can also enter to win a $50 gift card to a local restaurant or Amazon.

2) Rep. Carl Sciortino's Office Hours
The Somerville State Rep. will be at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland St., today from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for office hours. On Saturday, he'll be at the Mystic Activity Center at the Mystic River Development, 530 Mystic Ave., from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

3) Celebrating Walking and Riding in Somerville
Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Somerville Bicycle Committee, Shape Up Somerville and members of the Board of Aldermen will celebrate riding, walking and public transportation this morning. According to a press release from the city, the celebration is for two milestones: 1) "The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) recently welcomed Somerville as an affiliate member, including us in a prestigious group of the 30 most progressive cities in the country enhancing quality of life through sustainable, active transportation." And 2) "Earlier this month, Somerville was also recognized by the League of American Cyclists with a Silver level Bicycle Friendly Community Award." The celebration is at the East Somerville Community School from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
