NextWave/Full Circle Christmas Trees, Somerville Youth Soccer Registration

Five things to know and do in Somerville on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013.

1) Somerville Youth Soccer Registration
Registration for spring soccer is already here, and you can register through Jan. 5 at blog.somervillesoccer.us.

2) Next Wave/Full Circle Christmas Trees
The Next Wave and Full Circle schools' annual Christmas tree lot opened on Sunday and runs through Dec. 18. The Christmas tree sale raises money for activities at the schools, which work with students with special needs. Students man the lot, gaining valuable experience. It's at the Latta Brothers Memorial Pool at Foss Park, 20 McGrath Hwy., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

3) Michelle Alexander (The New Jim Crow) Keynote Lecture
Michelle Alexander will speak about her new bestseller, "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness," at Tufts University tonight. The talk is at 7 p.m. at the Cohen Auditorium.

4) Schemers, Dreamers, and Fools: A Night of Opera and Illusion
Also at Tufts, the Tufts Opera Ensemble sings favorite opera pieces, including scenes from the "Marriage of Figaro," "Magic Flute" and "Don Giovanni." It's at the Distler Performance Hall at 8 p.m.

5) Weather
A chance of rain with a high around 51.

6) Happy Birthday
To a Somerville resident with a very Somerville name who turns 2 years old today.
