Middle School Writers' Conference, De-Leading Homes

Things to know and do in and around Somerville on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.

1) Middle School Writers' Conference
Any Somerville student in fifth to eighth grade can participate in this writing conference, which takes place from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave. Bring a piece of writing to share.

2) Making Homes Safe from Lead
Somerville received a $2.1 million continuation grant from the Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to "de-lead," for free, 120 homes, according to an announcement from the city. Somerville is the 11th most at-risk community in Massachusetts for risk of childhood lead poisoning, the announcement says. 3) Jacob Means and Friends String Concert and Pickin' Party
You'll hear some new sounds mixed with traditional folk music at this concert in Inman Square. It's at 8 p.m. at Outpost 186, 186 Hampshire St., Cambridge.

4) Mudflat Open Studio and Sale
Remember, you still have time to visit Mudflat Studio, at 81 Broadway, for it's annual open studio and sale. It ends on Dec. 15.
