Last Chance to Join Union Square Advisory Committee

And the Gilman Square Advisory Committee. Also, the Kiwanis Club has a new president, students can get free homework help, and comedy comes to Davis Square. Five things to know and do in Somerville on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013.

1) Deadline for Union and Gilman Squares Committees
The city is convening two committees to advise the city's strategic planning office on the futures of Union and Gilman squares. The committees will address things like economic development, land use, housing, transportation, open space and quality of life. If you're interested in volunteering for one of these committees, the deadline to apply is today. Contact Stephen Houdlette in the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development at (617) 625-6600 ext. 2521.

2) Somerville Kiwanis Club Appoints New President
The Somerville Kiwanis Club recently appointed Rui Domingos, chief executive officer at CPCU Credit Union, as its 2013-2014 president. The club works to help children in the community and has run programs such as Reading is Fundamental, Bike Safety Day and Historical Perspectives. Domingos hopes to increase membership over the next year.

3) Free Homework Help
The Tufts University Leonard Carmichael Society is offering free math and science homework help to Somerville teens. If you're a teen and you need a little direction with math and science—and believe me, cosines and balancing chemical equations will drive many people to go into the lucrative world of blogging—show up at the Somerville Public Library's teen room Mondays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

4) Comedian Kevin Meaney
The Boston Comedy Festival begins tonight, and one of the acts is Kevin Meaney, who's been on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno—and Johnny Carson—Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with David Letterman, Regis, Oprah, and other big-name shows. You can see him tonight at Davis Square Theatre (under Foundry on Elm), at 9 p.m. Also, make sure to check out all the other acts at bostoncomedyfest.com.

5) Weather
Mostly sunny with a high around 49.
