Gardening Without a Design, Oktoberfest

Five things to know and do in and around Somerville on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.

1) Design-less Gardening: An Ecological Approach
Dan Jaffe of the New England Wild Flower Society "will discuss his ideas on disregarding traditional design rules and adopting a new approach to garden design by looking to nature for inspiration," according to the listing. It's part of the Somerville Garden Club's monthly talk series, and it takes place at 7 p.m. at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland St.

2) Oktoberfest at Olde Magoun's Saloon
Throughout September and October, Olde Magoun's Saloon will be serving beers from German brewers along with things like Knockwurst, Jägerschnitzel, and plates of Würste. Tonight's brewer is Hofbrau.

3) High School Information Night
Learn about private and parochial school options in the area, including Matignon High School and Saint Clement School. The information night is at 6:30 p.m. at The Joseph Mirabello Gymnasium at Matignon High School, 1 Matignon Rd., Cambridge.

4) High School Placement Test Training
Eighth grade students interested in taking the Catholic High School Placement Test can take a preparatory course at Matignon High School.
