Firefighter Awarded for Saving Man's Life, Boston Comedy Fest

Five things to know and do in Somerville on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013.

1) Firefighter of the Year Award
Somerville Firefighter Christine Guelpa received the Firefighter of the Year Award at a ceremony held Nov. 9 at the American Legion Post 19. According to an email from the fire department, Guelpa stemmed a patient’s severe bleeding during a medical emergency. The victim later said Guelpa's actions saved his life. The email doesn't provide details about the emergency.

2) Boston Comedy Festival Semi-Finals
The Boston Comedy Festival tonight hosts two rounds of semi-finals in its comedy competition. Round 1 is at 7 p.m. at Davis Square Theatre, round 2 is at 9 p.m.

3) Book Discussion: A Quiet Revolution by Leila Ahmed
Harvard Divinity School Professor Leila Ahmed talks about her new book, which explores why women in the Muslim world wear the veil. The discussion is at 6:30 p.m. at the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave.
