Film and Discussion About Hunger in America, Backpacks for Students

Five things to know and do in Somerville on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013.

1) "A Place at the Table"
The screening of this documentary, about hunger in America, is part of a fundraiser for Hearty Meals for All, a Somerville free meals organization. There will also be a cocktail reception, live music and a panel discussion with Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz. It begins at 6:30 p.m. at The Armory.

2) Comedy Central's Certified Talent Search
Ten comics compete in a Comedy Central competition to become the nation's next great standup. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Johnny D's in Davis Square.

3) Backpacks for Students
Citizens Bank will be giving 1,200 new backpacks to students at the Healey School Friday morning. It's part of the bank's Gear for Grades initiative. In all, the bank will be donating 6,600 backpacks to Massachusetts students. These are logo-free backpacks, by the way, and they're filled with things like  pencils, pens, spiral notebooks, crayons, plastic rulers, glue sticks, erasers and safety scissors, according to an announcement from the bank.

4) Somerville Toy Camera Festival at the Nave Gallery
The opening reception for one of the Toy Camera Festival exhibits takes place tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Nave Gallery, 155 Powderhouse Blvd.

5) Weather
Sunny with a high around 69.

6) Happy Anniversary
Yes, this is a sixth item on a list of five things. But six is a lucky number today. Happy anniversary to two people. They know who they are.
