Education Reform and Burlesque

A blog about problem bicycles and an eco-friendly fashion event are also in the list of things to know and do in Somerville on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013.

1) Look Before You Leap: Lessons for the Next Wave of Education Reform from the Last 20 Years
Somerville State Sen. Patricia Jehlen will lead a discussion about what's on the horizon for education reform—things like the Common Core standards and charter school expansion—and what lessons the past 20 years of education reform can teach us. It's at 6 p.m. at SCATV, 90 Union Square.

2) Burlesque
The Boston Babydolls, a burlesque troupe, opens their show, "The W. R. Athskellar Cavalcade of Curiosities," tonight at 8 p.m. at Uniun, 11 Sanborn Court, in Union Square. It runs Thursdays through Sundays until Nov. 2, and you can get tickets here.

3) A Bicycle Problem in Somerville
Greg Hill posted a blog on Somerville Patch called, "Dropping the Ball, Part Deux." In it, he says there is an "unmitigated bias towards cyclists and against pedestrians" in Somerville and there's an "epidemic of sidewalk cyclists in the squares." As a result, "seniors and persons with disabilities are left to use the sidewalk at their own peril," he writes. Thoughts?

4) Girls Night Out: Eco-Friendly Fall Fashion
Whats-Nü presents "eco-friendly, organic, fair trade, and locally-made fashion." Drinks and hors d'oeuvre's will be served, and it starts at 6 p.m. at 67 Holland St.

5) Weather
Sunny with a high around 78.
