City Accepting Community Preservation Commission Applications

Also, some tasty events, and a concert in Kendall Square. Five things to know and do in and around Somerville on Aug. 27, 2013.

1) City Accepting Community Preservation Committee Applications
Somerville voters adopted the Community Preservation Act during the previous election. The CPA, as it's known, funds housing, historic preservation and open space projects in the city, and those funds, about $1.5 million a year, are controlled by a community preservation committee. The committee has nine members, four of whom are residents. If you want to be on the commission, the city is accepting applications. You can apply here.

2) A Taste of El Salvador
Juan Carlos Menjivar will teach you how to make pupusas, revueltas, queso co loroco and other Salvadoran food. It's part of the Nibble series of cooking classes. The class starts at 6:30 p.m. at Kitchen, Inc., 201 Somerville Ave. See if tickets are still available here.

3) Flatbread Fundraiser for Boston Food Justice and Clarendon Hill Church
Eat pizza at Flatbread Pizza at Sacco's Bowl Haven today to benefit the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church and the Boston Food Justice Young Adult Volunteer program.

4) Concert Series @ Kendall Square: Air Traffic Controller
If you find yourself in the Kendall Square area today, you can check out a free concert. It's at 4:30 p.m. at 300 Athenaeum St., Cambridge.

5) Weather
A chance of showers and thunderstorms with possible heavy rain. Highs around 83.
